[ together. side by side. it's what loki wanted. he had wanted it so badly he came back. he stayed despite it all. despite knowing the dark corners of the universe. because he thought for a moment it could be real.
[Thor suppresses a croak that bellows from deep in his chest, deep in his heart. The words are enough to bring him to his knees, but he makes a conscious effort to stay standing, stay strong, stay steady. His shoulders are made to carry the burdens of the universe, but he finds he's weak and vulnerable to his brother's.
He always has been.
His grip tightens as he nods, firmly and resolutely.]
Then you shall. I will not leave you behind or leave with you. I will bring you home.
[ home. loki sniffles, burying his head in thor's chest so he can weep quietly, unencumbered by anyone seeing him. home is nothing. home is gone. but thor said they will, so it means something. it's fainter than a promise, threadbare, but it . . . it is thor. loki has always believed thor, no matter what happened. oh, he struggled with it, but in him lingers the belief that his brother would set it right. ]
[Thor says nothing, understanding that, despite his natural inclination, there are times where silence is better than inconsequential sound. He simply soothes the back of Loki's head, Thor's other arm clinging to his brother firmly and securely.
I'm still here, the embrace reminds. I will bring you home.
He won't pull away or make any motion to abandon this moment; if anything, he can feel his memory working furiously to etch it into its archives, hoping that it can draw upon its strength and its meaning whenever things get dark.]
[ it takes a long while, but loki's cries eventually subside and he finally pulls back a little to wipe his face, feeling the brief coil of shame over such a display. it's hard to break old habits. he swallows it down so he can face thor. ]
[Thor shakes his head once, a loving smile washing over his features. He's still got a bit of height on his brother, and Thor takes advantage of it to press a kiss to Loki's forehead. It is brief so as to avoid adding to Loki's embarrassment, but it is heavy with its significance.]
[Thor exhales a laugh and ducks his head down to catch Loki's gaze. He shakes his head again.]
I'm not.
I'm not because you are who you are, Brother. And for all that's happened, for all that you've told me .. I still think the world of you.
[With another laugh and a tap of his forehead to Loki's] We'll discuss the Tesseract at a later time. [It was easier to let go of the anger if he poured some humor on it.]
[ a little bit of tension trickles back into loki's shoulder at the mention of the tessaract but he nods. it is a discussion that needs to happen after all. and it's the least loki could do. just not right now, wrung out as he was. ]
[The corners of Thor's lips tug downward into a frown, a little more hurt than he'd like to admit. But instead, he plays it off and sighs, accepting the decision.]
Okay, no jewelry. I'll figure out another way to make you something. I'm not sure how yet, but I'll figure it out.
. . . You could make friends. Connect with others.
Isn't that what you're best at?
[ loki hates giving this advice, but neither does he want thor to stew in helplessness. in fear of the future. yes, having thor around means loki might end up being back in his shadow. a pale, weaker version when a better one exists.
but also the resentment stings less. it's hard to muster it when you're in the throes of self-recrimination. ]
Friends. [Thor take this into serious consideration, and after a few moments' reflection, he nods, clapping his brother on the back.] Yes! Yes, Brother. I will do that. Friends sound great.
no subject
[Thor still hasn't let go, nor does he intend to. He exhales a quiet sigh, shaking his head slightly.]
Brother, I've always believed we could take on the universe if we were side-by-side.

I want to go home. With you.

All right.

[Hands on Loki's shoulders, he tilts his head as he considers him for a few silent seconds and then gives a hearty slap to his back.]
It only took us a millennium to finally get here. [A pause.] I'm going to make you more crafts.
no subject
Thor, where would I even put all of them?
no subject
Thor's eyes widen as he comes up with a brilliant idea.]
I can make you things you can wear! Jewelry! Then you won't need to worry where to put them.
no subject
No.
no subject
Okay, no jewelry. I'll figure out another way to make you something. I'm not sure how yet, but I'll figure it out.

It is really not necessary.
