[Loki isn't the only one watching. Stephen's keeping an eye on him as well as the pack was finally starting to thin, both from felled creatures as well as some of the more cowardly deciding to make a run for it. Small favors, they seemed to be-

[Even as he shouted he was moving, leaving his axe buried in one of the creatures as he bolted towards his companion. He was strong to be sure, but attacked on both sides there was no way Loki could disengage to avoid the heavy spined arm swinging his way. So Stephen skidded in, catching the blow himself, vision greying at the spines sinking into his side. With a snarl, he grabbed hold to keep it trapped, sending a jolt of magic through it that had the thing screeching in agony as it finally yanked itself free, staggering away.]

[ Loki whirls, throwing a blade between the creature's eyes before he catches Stephen. The rest of the creatures, blinded and hurt finally leave, tail tucked between their legs. Not that Loki is payin attention anymore. ]

You fool! What possessed you to do that?

[With Loki's help, Stephen managed to keep his feet, only easing up when he saw that the rest of the creatures had decided they were a bit too tough a meal to try for.]

The second you turned to block that other one would have ripped your throat open. Can't have that.

[ Loki hisses, gently lowering Stephen down. ]

I could have survived it!

Oh sure, you'd only survive your jugular being opened, no big deal just a major artery-

[His voice hitched at the shift despite his efforts, face paling several shades. He was fairly sure he'd managed to avoid getting hit lethally, but it hurt like a bitch, and definitely felt like at least one of the spines had been left in his side, even if Loki couldn't see the injury with the dark fabric of his cloak in the way.]

[ Loki's breath hitches as he works to calm his fear. His connections are few, so the loss of any can devastate him. Carefully, he pours his healing magic over Stephen's wounds, struggling to maintain an expression of neutrality. ]

Keep quiet. This needs to heal.

[It was only that strain in Loki's attempt at a calm expression that had Stephen actually listening for a change, falling silent. Letting the other man concentrate on what he was doing, on healing the injuries that already had his side wet with blood, where the spines had driven deep. It was sheer luck that he hadn't been hit anywhere vital, but that still didn't make getting stabbed any more pleasant than it ever was.]

[ The magic does its work and Loki's face loses the strange tension etched around him, but it's easy to tell he's far from pleased. ]

You should not have done that.

I wasn't about to just let you get gutted.

[Sorry Loki, he's not sorry and he'd do it again if he had to.]

Why not? I've dealt with worse. And I have always survived.

[ Though it is a point of contention. There are times Loki prefers otherwise. ]

Just because you've dealt with worse doesn't mean you should have to.

[Don't mind the sorcerer, time to haul himself up, blood loss or no.]

I care about you. Is it really any surprise that I'd want to defend you?

[ Loki presses his palm against Stephen's chest. ]

Lie down.

[ He doesn't say yes it is, it always is. ]

[Stephen can't help the low, annoyed huff at being kept down, but for the moment he lets it happen. He clearly worried Loki a bit more than he thought he had with his reckless antics.]

Bossy.

[Well Loki, strap in for a life of surprises then.]

[ His lips twitch slightly. ]

It is best not to cross me when I am in a mood.

Was I crossing you?

[Tone light, almost a bit playful.

See Loki? He's alright enough to be a brat, clearly he can't be that poorly off.]

It certainly sounded like you were.

[ His fingers press themselves over Stephen's clothes, assuring himself of the warmth and the heartbeat beneath it. He may even be trembling. ]

I'd never be so horrible.

[Keeping words casual, a light bit of almost banter as Loki took his time, reassuring himself of Stephen's continued existence. For as odd as magic had made him, he at least had those easy indicators. Warmth and heartbeat.

Stephen didn't comment on the tremor he noticed, but he did lift a hand to curl scarred fingers over Loki's, a quiet motion of reassurance.]

[ Loki squeezes his hand unconsciously. ]

You are not allowed to depart in such a way. Not for me.

And I'm not about to stand by while someone tries to take you down.

[Sorry Loki, he didn't like even the possibility of you getting killed.]

That will never end.

[ Not as long as he lives. Loki knows that. It is part of a long line of debts he needs to fill. ]

Well good thing I'm not planning on going anywhere.

[He's not about to just let it happen. Sorry, not sorry.]

You had better not.

[ But perhaps someday, Loki will tire Stephen out. He has done that to all his other relationships. Even Thor. ]

I'm far too stubborn for a thing like that.

[He's honestly more worried that he'll do something to fuck this up. Or that maybe someday Loki would tire of him and all his baggage.]

So was Thor, once.

[ Loki sighs. What to do with this? He showed his hand too clearly. He smooths the crinkles on Stephen's clothes before rising and offering his hand. ]

[At least Loki wasn't the only one, or the first between them to do so. Stephen had started after all with his admission of love, for all he'd never meant to blurt that out. It didn't make it untrue though, and this certainly didn't hurt that claim.]

Well, good thing I'm not Thor then.

[He accepted the help up either way, but even when he was on his feet found himself a bit reluctant to release Loki's hand so quickly.]
