[ even if his nerves are a little fried. had something happened? was loki in trouble. he wipes his palms against each other while he waited in front of his memory wall, uncertain. ]

[Steve jogs over, smiling but clearly nervous. He reaches to pull Loki into a fast hug and then wipes his hands on his pants as well.]

Thanks, pal. I...uh. I didn't want you being the last to know... But I know this isn't...

[He sighs.]

[ loki's eyebrows furrow together in confusion. ]

Buck... And I. We are... Trying out being in a different sort of relationship. Together.

[ ah. loki's not surprised due to the reaction he had gotten. he is a little surprised at steve and perhaps a little envious, but he puts it aside. after all, he didn't harbor any illusions about himself.

still his voice is a little clipped. ]

I know you two don't get along. I didn't want you thinking this is gonna change things between us.

[He grips Loki's shoulders tight]

I want you two to get along, of course. But...even if that doesn't happen, you're still my friend.

[ loki crosses his arms. ]

That is putting it kindly. I have done nothing to your Bucky Barnes. He chose to dislike me out of his own accord.

[ still. he wonders if this is the end. why choose loki at all when there's something better? even friendship. ]

Look. In his defense, he was a few weeks off you trying to take over New York, back home.

[Steve shakes his head, dismissing that.]

But, I get it. He wasn't giving you a fair shake. But you're my best friend here and I'm making that real clear to him. Can you at least promise to give him another shot?

Fine. He can have another chance should he choose to pursue it.

[Steve reaches to pull him into a hug.]

It means a lot to me. You're both important to me. I'd hate to spend the rest of my life with you and him on visitation schedules.

[ he relaxes slightly at that. maybe it won't be too bad. maybe. ]

I doubt it is as bad as that. If I hated him, he would be dead.

[Steve has to laugh at that.]

[Steve frowns just a little, holding on to Loki's shoulders.]

I mean it though. You're important to me. You've seen a lot of me and I have seen a lot of you. I'm not getting rid of either of you so I'd like you to get along.

How about we have dinner together? All of us? We can talk?

[ it's hard to make eye contact. he knows how important he is. ]

I'll be there to make sure he doesn't make you kill him.

I think, at the end of the day, when it comes down to it, you'll choose him. And I rather not be there to see that happen.

[ loki doesn't believe it. how could he? thor chose heroism. asgard chose thor. odin chose thor. no one chose loki.

still he nods. ]

[Loki's face breaks Steve's heart. He tries to keep his eyes, face grieved in it's own right.]

I know you might not trust me. But I swear, Loki. I swore to Thor and I'll swear to you; I'm not leaving you behind in any way.
